I was reading a photography book the other day (see footer) and it described an exercise that I want to do to try and better my photography skillz.
Some background
It's an exercise by Johannes Itten, who ran the "preliminary course" to teach students the basics of material characteristics, composition, and colour at the Bauhaus in Germany in the 1920s. His theory of composition was rooted in one simple concept: contrasts. One of the first exercises he would set his students was to discover and illustrate the different possibilities of contrast. Of course, these were art exercises - and given that I'm an artist as well as a photographer, I could have done them like that - but this was in a photography book and I want to do the photography exercise.
The project itself
The project is in two parts. The first (the easy part) is to produce pairs of photographs that contrast with each other - either ones you've already taken or new ones. I'll be doing a mixture (probably mostly new).
The second part is to combine the two poles of the contrast in one photo. This obviously requires more
but I do like a challenge
You're also supposed to approach the contrasts from three directions, or, as Itten said, "[you have] to experience them with [your] senses, objectivize them intellectually, and realise them synthetically."
i.e.
get a feeling for the contrast first WITHOUT thinking of it as an image
then list the ways of putting this sensation across
finally, make a picture
I am not sure how well I'll do with that part.
The list
From Itten's original Bauhaus exercise:
Point/line
Area/line
Plane/volume
Area/body
Line/body
Large/small
High/low
Smooth/rough
Long/short
Hard/soft
Broad/narrow
Still/moving
Thick/thin
Light/heavy
Light/dark
Transparent/opaque
Black/white
Continuous/intermittent
Much/little
Liquid/solid
Straight/curved
Sweet/sour
Pointed/blunt
Strong/weak
Horizontal/vertical
Loud/soft
Diagonal/circular
A couple of others I might do coz I have an idea for them:
Dirty/clean
Help?
If anyone has any ideas about "continuous/intermittent" (either as two photos or as one photo) please tell me as I am stumped on that one!

New Project - Photo 52
Photo 52communityrelations (https://www.deviantart.com/communityrelations) are running another Photo 52 project. I decided to join in this year. I took a little while deciding on a theme but then I remembered that snail picture that everyone liked and how I've been wanting to take more photos with the mini people for ages now but not quite getting round to it. So I thought this would give me the impetus to actually get on with it.

Equipment Fail
Sadly, we weren't told about the project until 13 January, giving us just 2 weeks to catch up and do all January's entries by 3rd February. One of my lenses is broken so I had to rush in to Jessops and get it fixed. I won't
100 themes
The 100 Themes Challenge
1. Make 100 pics. Each pic having a theme listed below. Each pic should have ONE and only ONE theme to it, for it to count.
2. No time limit so have fun.
3. The main picture should be drawn but not limited to this.
(For all fair purposes, people are allowed to use their paint programs and photo shop to create the pic.)
3a. Pics should be of own artistic ability. You may not edit photos, or break any other rules set out in the dA etiquette policy.
Your pics can be anything from sketches and doodles to great master pieces. Just have fun with it.
4. The list below is to be placed somewhere in your journal for oth
100 themes: 1-25
Many of you will be familiar with the "100 themes challenge", having either done it yourself or seen someone on your watchlist participate in it.
I've done more than a quarter of it so far and to celebrate (and give me some encouragement to continue) I wanted to see how everyone else interpreted the themes and share the best ones with you.
In some cases I've added one or two extra deviations which weren't done for the 100 themes challenge but nevertheless fitted quite well to the theme.
Enjoy!

How bout a clock? Time is continuous, but that photograph shows how it stopped. Maybe a cracked watch?
